Branchipus schaefferi  Fischer, 1834
Main synonym = Branchipus visnyai    Kertesz, 1956
Taxonomical Classification:  Animalia / Arthropoda / Crustacea / Anostraca / Branchipodidae
Fairy Shrimp     Gamblu tal-għadajjar
Further Information:
This is a rare species prevailing in temporary rainwater rock pools situated on exposed Coralline limestone. Two closely related species of Brachipus have been recorded from Malta, B. schaefferi and B. visnayi, but recent studies are showing that the latter taxon is a synonym. They can be almost transparent, reddish brown or have a bluish tinge. They swim slowly at the bottom of rock pools, and feed on minute organic particles in water (filter feeding).
